Caroline Kang, cellist
Caroline Kang is an American cellist specializing in historical performance. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has appeared at the Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, Edinburgh Festival, Bachfest Leipzig, Thüringen Bachwochen, Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, Amsterdam Cello Biennale, and the Innsbruck Early Music Festival, performing with ensembles including B'Rock, Anima Eterna, Holland Baroque, L'Arpeggiata, and Concerto Copenhagen.
Caroline performs on a wide range of historical bass instruments from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, exploring their varied sizes, tunings, approaches to bowing, and their roles as both solo and accompanying instruments.
Her playing has been described as "sincere and nuanced" (The Washington Post), "particularly distinguished" (de Volkskrant), and "Caroline Kang brings out the warmth of the solo lines" (Early Music America).
Caroline studied modern and baroque cello, as well as historical performance practice, at the Eastman School of Music, Ithaca College, Cornell University, and the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague, where she studied with Steven Doane, Elizabeth Simkin, and Jaap ter Linden.
As a teacher, Caroline has given masterclasses and workshops on historical cello repertoire, technique, and performance practice throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, including at The Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Princeton University, ISI Yogyakarta Indonesia, and The Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She can be heard on various recordings for Outhere, Pentatone, CPO, Bridge, and Alpha.
Caroline has been teaching in the Early Music Department at Royal Conservatoire The Hague since 2015.
